madhav rai maithili song || maithili chaat songa || || maithili singer madhav rai ||

The day is reckoned from sunrise to sunrise.  Festivals, however, are performed according to Tithi.Tithi  may start anytime during the day and may last for 20 to 26 hours. Day and night have 4 prahars each.
For month both lunar and solar systems are followed. Lunar months end on full-moon day. Solar months are reckoned with Sankranti. Sankranti match with dates of Gregorian Calendar.
There are several New Years: Starting on 1 Chaitra, Chaitra Amavasya (Vikram), Mesha sankranti (Shakabda), 1 Savan (Sal). By convention, the last one is prevalent in Mithilanchal i.e. Shravan to Ashadh.
Chhath is a festival of bathing and worshipping, that follows a period of abstinence and segregation of the worshiper from the main household for four days. During this period, the worshiper observes purity, and sleeps on the floor on a single blanket. This is the only holy festival which has no involvement of any pandit (priest). The devotees offer their prayers to the setting sun, and then the rising sun in celebrating its glory as the cycle of birth starts with death. It is seen as the most glorious form of Sun worship.
